The latest Eliza and The Delusionals single Ever is a heartfelt dreamscape. A fairytale glimpsed through the overgrowth of some secret garden. Eliza’s voice floats weightlessly, like leaves carried on a seasonal breeze, while shimmering guitars and a propulsive rhythm carry the listener deeper into the band’s enchanted world.
Since breaking through with Just Exist, this Gold Coast three-piece have become one of Australia’s most beloved indie acts. Fans of their 2017 EP, The Deeper End will notice the evolution of their early sound in Ever. It’s a natural evolution, developed over years of well laid groundwork, gardening, and growth.
Their acclaimed breakout album Now and Then (2022) saw Eliza and The Delusionals nominated for multiple awards including Rolling Stone’s Breakout Artist of the Year and triple J’s Album of the Year. They followed its success with their sophomore album Make It Feel Like The Garden (2024) and have toured extensively since with tours spanning the shores of North America and Australia. After spending most of 2025 on the road, frontwoman Eliza Klatt was eager to show off what the band had in store next for their fans:
I’m very excited about our new era of music, and we felt ‘Ever’ was the perfect way to start our next release. The song, to me, is really influenced by our band’s roots. The song to me has a yearning vibe, it’s kind of sad, but I really connect with songs like that.
I feel like the last record we really experimented with textures and different instruments, but something about these songs felt like we needed to just go back to where we started, in a way – nostalgic, distorted guitars and things like that.
All the initial elements are still there, and Eliza’s dream-like voice still takes centre stage, but now it’s surrounded by guitars that jangle like vines, hooked and hanging from trees and soundscapes as ephemeral as sunlight. Ever, as with most of their music, sounds less like a song you listen to and more like somewhere you get lost in. They’ve developed a sound all their own since Make it Feel like the Garden and Ever continues that trajectory into the luscious nature as they nurture and evolve their new sound.
Eliza’s lyricism is also as heartfelt as ever. She sounds like the sun shining through the morning fog and rainbows reflected in dew droplets on the lawn. Lyrics like, “Do you ever think of me? Are you showing up in my dreams? Forever, ever falling” lead the listener along the perennial garden path of her emotions, with each twist and turn leading us deeper — there’s nothing like getting lost. Wander the path. Get lost in the garden, at least for the three minutes and twenty four seconds it takes to listen to Ever. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll have it on repeat.
